Sightseeing in Silkeborg - what to see. Complete travel guide
In the center of the largest lake region of Denmark is located a small town named Silkeborg. On one side the town is adjacent to Gudenaa - the longest river in the country. The other side of the town borders with several large lakes and a forest.
Tourists, who come to the city, are offered to try a large choice of activities including water sports, golf, riding rented bicycles and small motorcycles, or just walking in the city’s suburbs. Among the main attractions of Silkeborg the most significant are Museum of Art, which exhibits a collection of works of the great artist Asger Jorn; Silkeborg museum, which exhibits two ancient human bodies - a female one, preserved from 210 BC, and a male 2200-yearold body famous as Man of Tollunda. Here you will also find a special exhibit of old Danish glass, ancient jewelry and artifacts from the ruins of Silkeborg Castle, a collection of stone tools, as well as the most tremendous freshwater aquarium in Northern Europe.
Silkeborg is a fairly young city. Its founder was Michael Durson, who based a small paper mill in a forest at the end of the 19th century. Over time, a village grew up around the factory and turned into a large prosperous city later. Nowadays, Silkeborg is proud of its high-class dealerships. Headquarters of large companies and some financial institutions are located in the city.
One of the main symbols of the picturesque town is a beautiful Bölling Lake. It is a unique natural formation. One of the world's oldest glaciers feeds the lake. At the end of the 19th century, the reservoir began to attract researchers from all over the world. In 1870, they drained the lake especially for scientists to conduct a number of important studies. It was during this scientific program that traces of primitive people stay in these places were found. Back in the 19th century, peat plants were erected nearby. Now, the reservoir itself and the adjoining territory are declared a protected zone. You'll find many interesting places for hiking there. Tourists and local residents choose these scenic places for recreation.
Numerous religious sites built at the founding of the city remained safe. An excellent example is an ancient Silkeborg Kirke. They used red brick for the construction of the church. A tiled roof of emerald color makes an original contrast to its strict walls. Massive wooden doors, beautiful antique furniture, chandeliers and other elements of pristine design preserved there.
No less interesting is Mariehoj Kirke. It will definitely surprise visitors with its non-standard design. This church was built at the turn of the 19th and 20 century, as well, and is distinguished by a strict appearance. Behind its strict facade lies an incredibly modern interior. Historical finishing elements are surprisingly combined with fashionable design innovations. The spacious hall with a high ceiling is lit by huge designer chandeliers nowadays. During the last refurbishment, the church was beautifully decorated in wood. Unusual multi-level balconies were installed in its hall. Not every old church can boast such balconies.
