Every city of Thuringia is a unique historical center with many attractions, museums, theaters and other cultural and entertainment facilities. The capital of the province is the city of Erfurt located in the heart of Germany. Since ancient times, it has been the most important commercial and industrial area; in the Middle Ages it was famous for its universities. Today, visitors can see magnificent half-timbered houses and buildings in the Renaissance style, the famous Thuringian Bridge and many other notable historic buildings.
The city of Jena is known as the intellectual center, but those were not universities that made it famous. It is notable because of unusual glass that was produced by local factories. Today, you can learn the history and development of the industrial sector during an excursion to the Museum of optics situated on picturesque Carl Zeiss Platz. The museum has the world's largest collection of glasses, as well as antique optical instruments. The age of some exhibits is more than five hundred years. Near the museum there is the Planetarium, which will also please the guests with interesting excursions.
