There are several important cultural institutions on the territory of Carlton Gardens, such as the Melbourne Museum and Royal Exhibition Building. The latter is also a cultural monument of world importance. The building was constructed in 1880. It impresses with its scale and exquisite architecture. Since opening, the exhibition center was used for the most important events. Like at the end of the 19th century, today it is characterized by luxurious design.
In 1984, Melbourne was visited by Queen Elizabeth II. After that, the center was awarded the royal status. A first large-scale reconstruction was begun that time. Today, the Royal Exhibition Building is still used for conferences and exhibitions; the world-famous Melbourne Flower Fair is held there too.
