The Roughs Tower sea fortress, which represents an ancient sea platform, not far from the harbour town of Haridge, is a unique object. The platform was built during the Second World War for the protection of the port. And in 1967 a strange event happened to the former strategic object. The platform was captured by a retired Major Paddy Roy Bates, who proclaimed the captured fortress as an independent principality of Sealand.
The invaders failed to achieve recognition of the state. For many years the major himself and his family lived on the platform. During this time, strangers never managed to set foot on the territory of the fortress. There have been cases when residents of the unrecognized state fired passing ships. The creation of the principality on an abandoned sea platform is considered one of the most amazing adventures of the past century. The founder of the state spent 40 years of life on the platform, during this time he managed to earn a good fortune.
For many years Bates's income provided radio piracy, and afterwards, he profitablely sold several titles of the principality. Surprisingly, since its inception, the principality of Siland has had a very strong legal basis, which allows it to exist for many years. To get to the old military platform to outside people is literally impossible, at the same time, it has long attracted the attention of tourists from all over the world. In 2012 on the official website of the state there were reports that the government of Silenda intends to develop the tourism industry of the country. It is likely that soon everyone will be able to visit the amazing self-proclaimed state.
