The annual Carnevale di Venezia is a universal event. Venetian masks long remain undisputed symbol not only of Venice, but of the entire region. Not everyone knows that a few centuries ago masks have been actively used in the everyday life. Masks were hiding faces and giving confidence to those in love; they were used to tease relatives and friends too. Criminals were also wearing masks and that’s why everyday usage of this accessory was officially banned.
Venice Carnival starts in late January and lasts for more than two weeks; it is one of the most beautiful and interesting events in the world. According to historical records, the first carnivals has been held in the 11th century; at that time the holiday has been focused primarily on the lower strata of society.
