Due to its favorable geographical position the town and surroundings are very beautiful and colorful. Its images on River Rhone resemble magnificent paintings of Van Gogh.
The town is full of romance with its quite streets, secret gardens, secluded courtyards original and cozy at one and the same time cafes and restaurants.
Though one cannot say that the town is always quiet. It gained its popularity in the 13th century as a 'ringing town' thanks to a great number of bells there. And though its population is not so great it is usually doubled due to tourists visiting it.
Climate of Avignon is mild, good for out-of-door activities in summer. Every year the town holds a Festival which takes place in the courtyard of the Palais des Papes or any church or chapel and it attracts lots of people.
Besides the official part of the festival there are also some other shows consisting of not less than 400 acts and lasting all through the day and night. The town changes in these days, as everything is somehow connected with the Festival: posters are everywhere, all the cafes and restaurants are full of musicians and actors ready to play non-stop.
