Fully Vaccinated Travelers from the EU and US are Now Quarantine Free in the UK
Good news for travelers from the European Union and the United States who have planned to visit the UK this summer. Starting from August 2, fully vaccinated people from these regions are allowed to enter the UK and enjoy their stay in the country without any quarantine requirement. Eligible travelers must be vaccinated with the authorized vaccines, which are approved by either European or American drug regulators. Will we finally see higher occupancy at London and Edinburg hotels?
The new rule applies to most of the European Union, including Switzerland, Iceland, and Norway. Travelers coming from France, however, are exempt from the rule and are still required to self-isolate for 10 days after the arrival. Additionally, these travelers still need two negative coronavirus tests one before the trip and another test taken right after the arrival.
Although travel restrictions are not fully lifted, this is a huge step forward for tourism in the UK. This is one of the most important sectors in the country’s economy, and it provides jobs for more than half a million people across the UK. Inbound tourism gives £28 billion to the country’s economy, so it is important to help the sector survive in this tough period. Businesses that traditionally targeted foreign tourists have almost stopped working since March 2020. With weak summer 2021, they are at risk of not surviving through winter.
The government also allowed cruises that depart from the UK. This is also an important decision as the cruise industry found it extremely hard to prevent bankruptcy. Airlines are looking forward to more transatlantic flights that were popular before the pandemic. In 2019, travelers from the US contributed more than £4 billion to the economy of the UK.
However, some experts point out that these measures will have little effect until countries coordinate to reopen borders and enable safe international travel for vaccinated people or people with negative COVID-19 tests. The United States Travel Association welcomed the decision of the UK to let the borders open for fully vaccinated US travelers and pointed out that the States also need to reopen national borders and offer similar rules for travelers from the EU, UK, and Canada.
